Sailboat Mast Climbing

Plan out what you are doing and let all around be aware of what is planned.

Go aloft in calm waters if possible. Also try to choose a location with minimum boat traffic in order to minimize any movement from surrounding traffic. Try to avoid windy conditions or rough water unless absolutely necessary.

Prearrange all the tools necessary to do the job and attach them to something.
Put lanyards on the tools that are going to be taken up and secure them to something else that's going up-the boson's chair, a bucket or attach them to the climber's belt.

Prepare two halyards to be attached to the climber. Do not use halyard shackle. Tie the halyards directly to the boson's chair and/or climbing harness.

Use a full climber's harness ( that covers both the chest and seat areas ) in addition to a boson's chair. If you don't us the boson's chair have two halyards for safety backup. Also have something with safety pockets available.

Agree on a communication system. It's difficult to hear and one word communication is simple, useful and faster. Make sure everyone is on the same page with the lingo. It's a good idea for everyone to practice repeating commands so understanding is complete.

Rig a canvas bucket on another halyard or messenger line that can be pulleyed up and down. The bucket frees the hands and make for a safer work environment.

Take your time and go slow. Minimize any movement by crew on deck. The watch below should remain at a safe distance to avoid any falling objects direct path.
